What is a flexible schedule?
Flexible schedule does not mean there is no schedule. Even though there are not fixed times in the schedule for lessons, teachers, staff and the media specialist may sign up classes to use the media center for many reasons – for an author study, genre study, research and more!

The flexible schedule allows students to use the library media center’s resources at the time learning takes place for the students. We, as the staff at Whittier, can integrate information literacy skills into the classroom curriculum to make learning more meaningful for the students. For example, if second grade is learning about Space, the classes could come to the media center to hear a story about Space, to search Space websites, or to complete research on this topic. We are very excited about how the flexible schedule allows us to increase student achievement by teaching information literacy skills while also using their classroom curriculum.

How many books can students check out?
Students from Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st grade may check out one book at a time.

Students from Grades 2-5 may check out two books at a time. Up to two additional books may be checked out for class projects and/or assignments.

When do students come to the library to exchange books?
Students from Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st grade visit the library once a week for a class book exchange. Students in Grades 2-5 visit the library once every two weeks for a class book exchange.

Students also may obtain a library media center pass from their teacher and visit the library any time during the school day to exchange their books.

When are the books due?
Books are due on the students' next class book exchange. We do not stamp the due dates in the back of the books. If students forget their library books, they will recieve a "friendly reminder", an overdue slip, stating which books they still have checked out. Students may also renew their books if they are not yet finished reading them.

What do we do if a book becomes damaged?
If a book is damaged, please send a note along with the book stating what happened to the book. We will try to repair it. However, if it is beyond repair, we will send a letter home with the student, asking you to pay for the book. The money we receive will be used to purchase another copy of the damaged book.

What do we do if a book becomes lost?
If a book becomes lost, please send us a note letting us know. We will check in the library to see if it was returned. If not, we will send a notice home with the student, asking parents/guardians to pay for the lost book. The money we receive will be used to purchase another copy of the lost book. If the lost book is found at a later time, please contact us and we will refund your money.
