Family Involvement Fact Sheet #1

What is Family Involvement?

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) adopted the Family Involvement policy using the ideas of Joyce Epstein at Johns Hopkins University. Epstein’s family involvement research consists of six components listed below. These components are not listed in hierarchical order.

Parenting
· Supporting children as students by helping families establish positive home environments

Communicating
· Using effective forms of two-way communications about school programs and student progress

Volunteering
· Organizing and recruiting family help and support

Learning at Home
· Sharing ideas and information with families to help students at home with homework and other related activities

Decision-Making
· Developing family leaders by including families in school decisions

Collaborating with the Community
· Finding and using resources and services from the community to support the school

The Arc of Frederick County will be offering three separate programs (for adults and kids) on September 20th at 10 am. AND once again on October 18th at 10am. Parents can participate in “Parent Talk” while their children are involved in Sibshop or Parents Day Out.

Parent Talk

This is an opportunity for parents to meet and discuss their typical siblings and how having a brother or sister with a developmental disability is impacting their lives. Included in our discussions will be sibling dynamics and sharing ideas regarding how we can address them.

Please contact Colette Hough for more information or to register your child chough@arcfc.org, or 301-663-0909.

Sibshop (older group - 8-13 years)
Sibshops are a lot of fun and provide a chance for brothers and sisters of children with developmental disabilities to meet in an atmosphere that’s positive and upbeat. We participate in fun activities, interesting discussions, and eat great food. Please contact Colette Hough for more information, chough@arcfc.org or 301-663-0909.

Parents Day Out (3 – 14 years)
PDO is a monthly program intended to provide respite for parents of a child(ren) with a developmental disability. The child with the disability and their siblings are eligible to attend. Our training room is filled with fun toys and games and other activities to entertain your children. This program fills quickly each month, so please contact Rachael Shankle for more information, rshankle@arcfc.org or 301-663-0909.

Goodman’s Guidance Goodies

August 2008

Welcome back to a new school year. I am excited to continue working with Whittier students and families. We will have some new projects in the Guidance program. Twelve students were selected to be a part of our Peer Mediation Program. The students will host Mediator Monday on Morning announcements. The students will review our PBIS rules as well as pillars of character.

I will be offering lunch groups for 1st-5th grade this year. Students will receive a sign up form. We discuss topics such as anger management, social skills, friendships and family issues. Last year one hundred and fifty-nine students participated in lunch groups. I will also offer a group for families who are deployed or deploying. I have several resources on this topic for the children.

It is going to be an exciting year. Please feel free to contact me or stop by with any concerns.

My name is Ms. Goodman and this is my second year at Whittier.
I have been a school counselor for thirteen years. I originally
received my training in New York. I then accepted a position
in Reading, Pennsylvania where I worked in a large school
very much like Whittier. I am not new to FCPS. I was a
Guidance Counselor in Thurmont for six years.

The primary focus of our school-counseling program is to
promote and enhance learning. I work with all students by
doing classroom lessons on various topics at each grade level.
These lessons are derived from the grade level indicators in
the FCPS guidance curriculum. I facilitate small groups during
lunch/recess time. I also work with students individually and
with other students mediating friendship problems they may
have with one another.

I have a large parent resource center so please feel free to stop
by and browse materials.
