Communication guidelines

West Frederick Middle School has a policy of open communication with parents and community members. A phone call to a staff member will be returned within 24 hours (excluding weekends). If a call or email is not returned within that time frame, please call the main office and speak to an administrator and we will facilitate the communication.

Emails are often a faster means of communication because teachers can respond during their planning periods or immediately after school. Phone calls are also welcome, however.

We plan to update our web site this year and have it contain more up to date information. Our bi-monthly newsletter will be posted on the web along with a calendar, which is updated weekly. We will post important information as necessary on the web site without necessarily waiting for a newsletter update. We will also use the web site to post information about our remodeling process. It is likely that FCPS will appoint a point of contact for basic construction updates, and if so, that contact information will be posted on the website.

The school will send home a newsletter with students two times a month. This will go home on Fridays, so be sure to ask your child for the newsletter. Our newsletter will contain a calendar, announcements from the school, announcements or information from a particular teacher or grade level, and if applicable, any flyer or announcement from the community which has been approved by FCPS central office. (This is an FCPS requirement, not a WFMS rule.)

The PTSA will send home a newsletter on the alternate weeks. It will contain a PTSA calendar, information from the local and national chapter of the PTSA, possible news about student awards or accomplishments, and community news. Community news or flyers must have the approval of one of the principals at WFMS before distribution.

We will continue with our Homework Hotline, recorded every day between 4:00 and 4:30. Parents will be sent instructions with the telephone number to access Homework Hotline.

And, last, but not less important, is our Pinnacle grade system. Teachers will be asked to update grades every week on Pinnacle and parents can access these grades from home. Information will be sent home describing this process and the passwords necessary to access your child’s grades. We will also encourage our teachers to use the email/note system, which is part of Pinnacle to send emails to entire classes, and therefore, keep parents updated with general information from the class.

Using all of these lines of communication will help parents be informed of what is happening at WFMS in general and be assured that their calls and/or emails are responded to promptly. If you should need assistance accessing any of these methods of communication, please call our school office and we will be glad to help you.
