Presented
by Dr. William R. Stixrud. Dr. Stixrud
is a clinical neuropsychologist and director of William Stixrud and Associates

This
workshop begins with a brief introduction to the physiology of anger. It then turns to an exploration of the
relationship between stress, inflexibility, and anger and to the question of
why some children and teens are more easily angered than others. This is followed by a brief discussion of the
clinical assessment of anger and the childhood disorders that are associated
with inflexibility and frequent anger. The presentation then introduces the
idea that inflexibility and anger reflect deficits in skills acquisition
(rather than motivation). Ways of
helping angry youngsters through modeling and empathy are then explored. Finally, suggestions are offered for creating
prevention-oriented home and classroom environments, for handling angry
outbursts at home and in the classroom, and for teaching anger management
strategies to children and adolescents.
