Environmental Science Club

The aim of the Environmental Science Club is to increase student understanding of, appreciation for and involvement in addressing environmental issues.  Just a few ideas from students: hiking/nature walks, camping trips, Chesapeake Bay Foundation field trips, recycling projects within school, and projects to help local wildlife. All students are welcome to participate as much as they can!   Our next meeting will be Tues., DECEMBER 18 in Ms. Staley's room, 308.  The time frame will be after school until 4:30 next week (though students can catch the Activity bus if needed).  Starting in January we'll meet every-other Thursday. wfmSTARS!

This is a performance based ensemble who strives to do community work by performing in the Frederick area. A group of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders come together to act, sing and even dance a little too.  This group meets on Thursdays after school from 3:10 to 4:00 pm. Tri-M (Music) Honor Society

Tri-M is facilitated by Ms.McEndree.  Acceptance was through application and meeting criteria.  Students need to earn a B in band/chorus class, a C in other classes, and maintain good character.  They meet throughout the year for different activities. *We have already participated in the Light the Night Walk and raised over $600 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We are planning a trip to a dinner theatre on December 22nd. We are assisting a student at Elizabethtown College with gathering instruments, supplies, and money for a school in South Africa. Play Ball!

Hoops for Heart

Mr. Bono is seeking parent volunteers to help him coordinate a Hoops- for-Heart drive.  WFMS Students annually raise money for the American Heart Association through this project. Please contact Todd Bono if you would like to be a part or this effort. Contact Mr. Bono at 240-236-4010

After School Soccer Club

Do you like soccer and want to learn some fundamentals about the world’s most popular sport? West Frederick now has a club which will allow you to work on your game after school. Reading Rally

Facilitated by our Reading Specialist, Ms. Ginny Hines, this wonderful enrichment opportunity is for all students on all levels.  Students read one book per week, and meet for weekly learning lunches to discuss them.  It's a great way to have fun while learning, and possibly even participate in a county-wide competition late winter!  We also wish to thank our staff coaches, such as Ms. Dionne Griffith, for giving up their lunch time for this worthy cause! Sign Language Club

All grades are welcome to participate! All Sign Language Club meetings will be on Tuesdays from 3 – 4 pm in Room 210.  Students are encouraged to come and make new friends, learn a new way to communicate and join in the fun and games. Guitar Club

Student Service Learning

This is an ongoing opportunity for every student, facilitated by Mrs. Melanie Laffer.  Students may earn hours for meritorious service projects toward a special OPTIONAL certificate upon graduation from high school.  In order to accumulate up to 25 possible hours during middle school, students must comply with the following requirements:

  • When students have an idea for a project, they must stop by the Guidance Office or Mrs. Laffer's room, S-11, on the third floor and pick up a Service Learning contract.
  • All projects must be preapproved by Ms. Melanie Laffer on that contract.
  • Hours must be accrued outside the school day.
  • All activities must have an adult supervisor who signs the contract, attesting to the hours accumulated.
  • If students recently completed projects this current school year, but did not complete the form, please see Mrs. Laffer in room S-11 any day  after signing in  to Homeroom. Contact Ms. Laffer at 240-2364024

Student Council Association

Led by Mr. and Mrs. Wishner, the Student Council

WFMS- TV Morning Announcement Crew

Each morning 5 West Frederick Students are responsible for producing and delivering our school announcements via the school cable system. These students are selected each spring from the 7th grade class and serve all the following year. In addition these students help other groups in getting their personalized announcements on the air and assist in making student IDs for new students. Contact Mr. Dacey @ 240-236-4013

WFMS Stock Market Teams-

Our Stock Market teams are among the best in the county. A new nine week game will begin in February, 2008.

The WFMS Debate Team

WFMS offers the opportunity for several debate teams to compete each spring against other Frederick County Middle Schools. Organization of these teams to do research and to prepare speeches usually begins after Thanksgiving break for interested students. Contact either Ms. Reilly or Ms. Stefanick at 240-236-4085.

The Renzulli Writers

Students meet in small groups once a week, or every other week, pending schedule, to write short stories, poetry, essays, comics, and plays. Students receive writing instruction and coaching to submit their writing for publication. About  150 students currently participate. Enrollment is always open. The WFMS Literary Magazine

Students are invited to submit poetry, essays, short stories, and art work. Watch for announcements of deadlines. We will be looking for some parent volunteers and some potential business sponsors to help with the production of our literary magazine. Contact Ms. Reilly at 240-236-4085.

Jazz Band

Our Jazz band is a group of students who have a strong interest in instrumental music under the direction of Ms. McEndree. This group meets after school once a week to study and practice Jazz music. WFMS SPORTS

West Frederick Middle School fields a number of teams who play other middle schools representing The Frederick Youth Sports Association (FYSA) Our teams include Football (Varsity and JV), Fall Cheerleading, Boys Varsity and JV Basketball, Girls Varsity and JV Basketball, Winter Cheerleading. Yearbook Staff

RENZULLI Enrichment-2007-2008

The Renzulli program is a school-wide enrichment effort. All students are invited to participate in:

  1. Type I opportunities that include field trips, guest lecturers and classes requested by students. These are initiated by students or teachers.
  2. Type II activities most often happen in the classroom when students are taught a specific skill to enrich research or promote understanding of a designated topic.
  3. Type III projects are generated by the students. These include individual or small group research investigations, community service or the development of other ideas the student may have.
  4. National History Day—open to all interested students who want to investigate a topic in history on the theme of Conflict and Compromise. Watch for permission slips to come home with students who have expressed an interest.
  5. Type III research and outreach opportunities Students in all grade levels, either working on their own or in small groups, are engaged in a variety of projects, from writing songs, writing a play about bullies to present to elementary students, to learning more about the career of nursing.
