WFMS Book Fair Results !
Thank you to all
the students, parents and teachers who bought items from our October Book
Fair. Our sales of over $2,000 allowed
us to add over 150 books to the
WFMS Wall of
Honor
Attention Parents and Students !! It’s time to update our Wall of Honor! If you, or a member of your family, are
currently serving in the Armed Forces (or a Veteran), please send in a photo
along with their name and duty station to Mrs. Boyd. We want to include as many members of the
WFMS family as possible! What a great
way to recognize someone special! Photos
may be dropped off at the front office or emailed to Catherine.Boyd@fcps.org and will be
placed on the wall throughout the school year. Thanks for your support.
7th
Grade Team – Kleenex Request
We are asking all 7th grade students to
bring in 2 boxes of facial tissues (Kleenex) to their first period
classes. Cold season is upon us and
students are constantly in need of tissues.
Thank you for your cooperation.
8th Grade Life Skills
Term
2 finds Life Skills students hard at work in the kitchens. Students are
learning measuring and cooking skills while also learning to work with others
in teams. It’s great practice for that first job!
Students
have learned to make an easy, healthy breakfast and lunch. Next, they will
learn to make some recipes to share with their families during the holidays.
Students can earn extra credit by cooking for their families!
New …. WFMS
Baseball Club
Our new club is the
West Frederick Middle Cadet Baseball Club and is open to all our students. There is no cost to join. The advisors of this club are Mr. Bono (WFMS
teacher) and Coach Rhodes (FHS Head Baseball Coach). The club’s mission is 1) help mentor students
and 2) have fun, instruct and increase appreciation for baseball. If you have any questions about this club,
please contact Mr. Rhodes at 240-236-7005 or Mr. Bono at 240-236-4010. Mr. Bono has the Club membership
applications. Club meets every Wednesday
from 3-4 pm in the
WFMS GYM.
News from the Renzulli Room
We’re
excited to be publishing the first edition of the WFMS literary magazine! A selection of student work produced in the
creative writing groups will be showcased in the magazine. Karen Johnson, an
eighth grader, is taking charge of the publication and is currently recruiting
assistant editors, student assistants and a graphics and design
coordinator. If you would like to help
our effort in any way (funding, advising, etc.) please call Judy Reilly at
240.236.4085 or e-mail her at judith.reilly@fcps.org.
The
creative writers are still working the keyboards and notebooks and are
blossoming into serious authors.
We
need judges to help determine the writing we send to an upcoming national
writers’ competition sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English.
Please contact Judy Reilly if you can help.
Watch
for National History Day information to come home with students who have
expressed an interest in this national competition.
Debate
team applications will be available following Thanksgiving break. Announcements
will be made on the AM broadcast.
We
have several students working on independent projects: Chelbi Riley is planning
a field trip, Kellen Haile is looking at designing an electric scooter, Haley
Tenn is researching dog abuse in the county, and MacKenzie Bainbridge is
creating a powerpoint presentation on

Yearbook Update
Fall presales for the yearbook have now ended. Our order has been placed. We will offer another presale in the spring, on a first come, first serve basis. We will NOT take any more orders until then. Stay tuned for details.
Donate Used Inkjet Cartridges
The technology department
will once again be fundraising to help with technology related expenses by
collecting used inkjet cartridges (no toner cartridges please), old cell phones
and chargers, and this year we will accept old video games and controllers as
well. Instead of filling the landfill, you can donate these items to WFMS and
help recycle them. Send your tech items to be recycled to Mr. Dacey in room
218. Thanks !

Student Service Learning
Are service learning hours required for
graduation? The answer is yes and no.
A certain number of hours are required for graduation from a
However, students may choose to earn
an optional
Meritorious Service Certificate at graduation, as well. Many of the
things they do for the good of the community at large may qualify for these
optional meritorious service hours. In order for a student to earn that
certificate, s/he must complete 75 hours of pre-approved, supervised,
documented activities-- outside the school day -- by graduation. Up
to twenty-five of those hours may be accrued in middle school.
Activities that qualify must be pre-approved by Melanie Laffer, the WFMS Service
Learning Coordinator, and students must complete a contract in order to log
their hours. Students, if you have an
idea for a voluntary service learning project, before you engage
in that activity, please stop by the Staff Development Room, #121, pick up a
contract, and get it pre-approved by Mrs. Laffer. Earn credit for
the good deeds you do outside of school!
Review of the medication
policy. If your child needs to take ANY
medication at school, you MUST have a Medication Authorization form
filled out and signed by your physician and the parent/guardian. This includes over the counter medications
such as Tylenol, Motrin etc. Medications
must also be brought into school in the correctly labeled prescription
bottle or original over the counter bottle or package. NO baggies containing medication
will be accepted. An adult MUST
bring the medication into the building and/or pick it up to take home. Students are not permitted to carry
medication with the exception of inhalers with physician permission and
clearance from the health room. Your
cooperation in this matter promotes safety for our children.
Please update the health room
with any medical/health concerns that you have concerning your child, during
the year. This information is updated yearly from the Emergency cards completed
by you during the beginning of the year. If Emergency contacts, phone numbers,
medical conditions, change during the year, please inform us so that we can
provide appropriate care and contact you in case of an Emergency. Thank you,
