VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

COMMITTEES:
The following gives a short explanation of the various PTA committees and shows the Chairperson for this school year.  If you would be interested in helping on any of these committees, please feel free to contact the Chairperson or any officer.  Help is always needed!

After School Enrichment – Donna Yocum, contact information is located in the PTA directory.  Provides after school programs for students (i.e., foreign languages, reading enrichment, sports, etc.).

Birthday Board - Sharon Engle 301-874-2784 or Engle.Maryland@adelphia.net .  Maintains the student birthday bulletin board outside the Principal's office.  Coordinates distribution of birthday tokens to students.  This activity is ongoing throughout the year.

Book Fair – Lisa Dempsey 301-663-0039 or gldempsey@msn.com .  Organizes and runs the Book Fair done for the benefit of the Media Center.   Students and parents have the opportunity to purchase books from a large selection of age-appropriate titles.

Box Tops & Grocery Receipts –Lauri McDonald, contact information is located in the PTA directory.  Collects, bundles and submits General Mills Box Top logos.  The school receives checks periodically from General Mills based upon the number of logos submitted.  The money goes to the School Improvement Team to be used for items and events specifically for students.  The program submission period runs through the school year, but Box Tops may be collected year round. Organizes and monitors the grocery store programs which provide computer equipment, playground equipment, etc. based on the dollar value of tapes collected.  The programs run from September to March and requires little in-school time.

Character Counts – Julie Canaday 301-865-6820 or juliecanaday@hotmail.com .  Works with the Guidance Office to promote and implement the Six Pillars of Character program in the school.  The Six Pillars are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Citizenship, Responsibility, Fairness and Caring.

Cultural Arts – Brenda Coggins 301-865-9521 or Brenda@youngschool.com.  Selects and schedules performances/events to be presented in the school.  These six to eight events are spread over the entire school year.  Minimum time in school time is required.

Family Activities – Kim Sweeney 301-874-4316 or sweeneki@yahoo.com and Janine Borofka, contact information is located in the PTA directory. Organizes and runs family activities, such as movie night and bingo, for all students and their families.

Fifth Grade Promotion – Anne Gallo and Terri Hayes, contact information is located in the PTA directory. Plans and organizes activities related to the promotion to middle school of the UES fifth graders.

Friday Flyers – Julie Canaday 301-865-6820 or juliecanaday@hotmail.com .  Collects, collates and distributes informational papers that originate within and without UES.  This committee distributes them to the teachers for the students to bring home to parents.  This committee gathers at the school on the last school day of each week that school is in session.

Fundraisers –Mimi Elias 301-874-5794 or mebejc@yahoo.com , Laura Shelton and Lori Shrode, contact information is located in the PTA directory.  Organizes and runs the major fundraising events for the year.  It begins the first week of school and is finalized in- November.

Grammar Gazette – Lauri McDonald 301-696-0733 or grammargazette@comcast.net.  Publishes the Grammar Gazette each school month.  Requires some coordination with PTA committees, teachers and staff for submission of articles.

Hospitality/Welcome – Krissy Eill 301-607-4483 or kmeill@comcast.net and Angela Tomasulo, contact information is located in the PTA directory.  Provides welcome for Orientation and Back to School Nights, as well as organizing and having the Grandparent’s Breakfasts.  Sends messages in the name of the PTA for recognition of significant events in the school community.

Legislation/County Council – Christine Alexander. Designated representatives to the PTA Council and Board of Education of Frederick County, comprised of representatives from all over Frederick County.  It meets four times a school year.  This committee also is responsible for keeping abreast of legislative issues affecting PTAs and our children.

Library Coordinator – Julie Canaday 301-865-6820 or juliecanaday@hotmail.com and Callee Stauffer, contact information is located in the PTA directory.   Assists librarian with coordination of volunteers and other duties as requested.
 
Magnet Liaison – Anne Gallo 301-865-5320 or LadyHawk@arczip.com.  Assures continuity, integration and partnership among the local school community and the magnet program students, parents and teachers.  The magnet liaison attends and actively participates in PTA Executive Board meetings and keeps the Board informed of magnet program changes, needs, etc.  The Liaisons advocate, when needed, at the county and/or state level for the magnet students and program.

Membership –Nicole Robertson 301-607-4525 or nmrmoog@aol.com and Kelley Somerville, contact information is located in the PTA directory.  Organizes the PTA membership drive in the fall.  Collects dues, distributes membership cards, and submits money to the Treasurer.

Parent Involvement Coordinator –Jana Keifer and Jane Wilcom, contact information is located in the PTA directory.  Organizes the parent volunteers and works with the staff coordinator to match parents and teachers or tasks.  In conjunction with the staff coordinator, runs parent training sessions.  Keeps track of parent volunteer hours by means of a log book outside the office.

RIF Program – Cindy Jock, contact information is located in the PTA directory. Reading is Fundamental – Program scheduled to encourage 2nd grade students to pursue reading.

Room Parent Coordinator – Krissy Eill 301-607-4483 or kmeill@comcast.net and Shannon Vetter 301-514-1018 or snickensvetter@yahoo.com .  Provides training and information for room parents.

Scholarship – Toni Kellinger 301-607-4494 or Tkellinger@aol.com .  Oversees the PTA scholarship award of $1000 given annually to a former UES student graduating from a Frederick County Public High School.

School Improvement Team –  Parent representatives to the School Improvement Team (SIT) which is responsible for the overall direction of the school.  The team is composed of faculty, administration and parent representatives.  Meetings are held periodically throughout the year.  Parent representative keeps PTA abreast of SIT decisions.

School Mall –  Organizes the annual catalog fundraiser.

School Spirit – Julie Canaday 301-865-6820 or juliecanaday@hotmail.com .  Organize school spirit activities and the sale of items related to the promotion of school spirit.

Silent Auction – Tracey Barss 301-874-3023 cropnkitty@gmail.com , Kera Drabick, Holly Barass and Della Laster, contact information is located in the PTA directory. Committee responsible procuring donations for the famous Silent Auction held each Spring.

Staff Appreciation – Tina Allgaier and Kate Landro, contact information is located in the PTA directory. Organize events to recognize teachers and staff.  Usually involves a Support Staff day in the fall and a Teacher Appreciation Week and Secretary's Day in the Spring, as well as providing lunch for teacher’s prior to the start of school and dinners during Parent/Teachers Conferences.

Strawberry Festival - Organize and oversee the annual festival held in Spring.  This one day event is comprised of games, activities and food services and is run similar to a carnival.

TV Turnoff –Kim Sweeney 301-874-4316 or sweeneki@yahoo.com and Janine Borofka, contact information is located in the PTA directory.  Coordinates the annual TV turnoff week in the spring and plans a family activity for that week in conjunction with the Family Activities committee.

Web Site – Terri Proctor at theresa.proctor@fcps.org and Nikki Cicerone at nicole.cicerone@fcps.org. Designs, implements, tests and maintains our school Web site.
