Karen McGaha – Reading Specialist

My name is Karen McGaha and I am the reading specialist at Tuscarora Elementary.   I live in Adamstown with my husband, Arnie, and our two sons, Jack and Sean.   Our children keep us very busy but we love every minute of it!   I love my job at Tuscarora.   Working with students and helping them learn to read is very rewarding.   I also work with staff members and together we work to constantly improve the instructional program at our school.   I’m proud of this staff as they are very dedicated to children.   Another part of my job that I enjoy is working with parents through the different volunteer programs.   Tuscarora has amazing parent support and that makes a huge difference to both the students and staff.   If you ever have any questions regarding language arts, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Jacqueline Moore - ELL

I am so excited to begin my fourth year at Tuscarora Elementary in my new ELL Targeted Reading Intervention position! It will be challenging and rewarding to be working with our students to become proficient and confident readers and writers.    My experience in Frederick County has been very rewarding. I taught first and second grade at South Frederick Elementary now Lincoln Elementary and then opened Ballenger Creek Elementary, teaching 2nd grade for 2 years and then facilitated the enrichment lab and reading intervention for first graders for 8 more years. I also had one year’s experience teaching reading intervention at New Midway Elementary with fourth and fifth graders.   I have taught 3 rd grade at TuES for the past three years and look forward to adding Reading Intervention to my experiences here.   I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees in Early Childhood Education from Hood College.

When I am not working at school, I enjoy quilting, reading, gardening and walking. I have 2 grown daughters, who are also teachers in the county. I spend lots of time with them and their families.

This year will be an exciting time for all of us at Tuscarora Elementary

Hi! My name is Christy Tressler and I am one of the reading intervention teachers at Tuscarora Elementary. This is my 15 th year teaching in Frederick County. Most recently I was at Whittier Elementary as a reading intervention teacher for 3 years. Prior to that I was at Hillcrest Elementary for 1 year as a primary reading specialist. I’ve also taught 2 nd grade at Whittier Elementary and 1 st and 2 nd grade at Waverley Elementary where I was also a Reading Recovery teacher for 3 years. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Shepherd College and my Master’s degree in Reading from McDaniel College.

When I’m not working I love to spend time with my family!! My husband also works for the Frederick County Public schools as a guidance counselor at New Market Elementary. We have a daughter named Lynnsey who is in kindergarten this year and a son named Ryan who is 2 years old. I also enjoy reading, walking, and scrapbooking in my spare time.

I’m excited to be a part of the Tuscarora staff and I’m looking forward to working with the students and their families. I enjoy helping students with reading so that they can love reading as much as I do! Let’s have a wonderful 2007-2008 school year!!
