READING & MATH
INTERVENTION
READING INTERVENTION
Reading Intervention has been a special
program here at Thurmont Middle for the last five years. Students in
6th, 7th, and 8th grades are part of the program. The purpose of reading
intervention is to assist students who are having some problems with
different reading strategies. In addition to improving their own reading
skills, the students have become involved in improving reading for our
entire community. Each spring the students host Book Buddies and invite
children from our feeder pattern to a fun night of storytelling and
reading. As each child leaves that night, they carry home a bag of new
books to read. The students in reading intervention have become the
leaders in reading here at TMS.
MATH INTERVENTION
Math Intervention is a program that Thurmont Middle School has developed
to meet the needs of students who require extra support in math.
Students are given a diagnostic test as a way to identify skill
gaps. Then they are given
work to practice skills that have been identified as areas of need.
It is a program that is designed to provide the students with
individualized instruction. After
completion of practice worksheets or end of term, students are given a
post-test to evaluate student improvement.
Students are offered math intervention if they received a basic score on the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) in math. The MSA is our best indicator of the students’ success on the High School Assessment. The High School Assessment is a graduation requirement. It is our hope that we will provide the students the assistance they will need to ensure success in all math classes as well as the state standardized tests.
