TMS PTA Meeting
Minutes
November 14, 2007 | 6:30pm
Thurmont Middle Media Center
Called meeting to order 6:30
Reading of PTA objectives by: Nancy King
October minutes were read and reviewed. A vote to
approve motioned by Jenn Rosenberry and was seconded by
Linda Meyers.
Officer’s
Reports:
President’s Report: Nancy King, The PTA Christmas
Dinner is to be held at Bollinger’s in Thurmont at 6:30
with a $15 gift exchange. Please RSVP.
Top sellers for the fundraiser are 8th grade Page Gray,
7th grade is Keegin Hill, and 6th grade is Annie Urian.
A reminder the pizza party for the fundraiser is
November 30th at 11:00am and at 1:00 pm.
Vice president Report: Jenn Rosenberry, have a
Happy Thanksgiving Holiday
Treasurer’s Report: Sharon Woerner, read and
approved and filed for audit. Motioned by Jenn
Rosenberry and seconded by Denise Thompson

Patty Keyser, Thank you very much for all the
baked goods for the 8th grade guest speakers.

Kathleen Burtner, T.M.S. is looking good with 118
members and 30 teachers.
- Newsletter:
Denise Thompson, Newsletter will be sent out every
other month so the next dead line is January 5th
2008.

Janet Fogle, Information was sent home in Thursday’s
take home folder on the upcoming National Contest
sponsored by the PTA

Coordinator: Kim Beavan, sending volunteer list
to Linda Myers and she will give the list to the
teachers.
- Ways and
Means: Julie DeRoner and Chris Polyniak, T.M.S.
will be having another fundraiser in February we
will be selling Wolfgang Candy.
Administrative
Reports:
Principal: Barbara Keiling Congratulations,
Maryland School Counselor Association named Mrs.Keiling
School Counselor Advocate of 2007.
Staff Report: Linda Meyers, The Shakespeare
Program is in need of funding PTA, will revisit after
the next fundraiser.
SIT Rep. Report : Julie DeRoner 8th grade field
trip to CTC cost $600.00 we have 100.00 donation looking
for funding for the other 500.00

Reports
President’s Report: Everyone was thanked for
attending, and reported the school year is off to a
great start.
Vice President’s
Report: No report.
Treasurer’s Report:
reviewed and approved. Motion by Jenn Rosenberry,
seconded by Kathy Morgan. To be filed for audit.
Committee
Reports
- Box Tops:
Please continue to send them in with your child.
- County Council:
No report
- Cultural Arts:
An assembly is being planned for November. More
information to follow at October’s meeting.
- Hospitality:
Thanks to everyone who baked for Back to School Night.
- Membership: 80
members to date. Watch backpacks for membership forms
next week.
- Newsletter:
First newsletter in backpacks today. Next deadline is
November 5th.
- Parent Involvement:
Pastries for Parents was a success. Thanks to Kim
Wildasin, Jen McGuire and Rachel Hamscher for helping.
- Publicity: No
report.
- Reflections:
Information will be sent home in November.
- Staff Appreciation:
Conference dinner for staff is October 15 at 5:00pm.
Parents are encouraged to make a dessert and drop it off
at school that day.
- Sunshine: No
report.
- Volunteer
Coordination: Volunteer forms for parents will be
sent home this week. The Volunteer Orientation will be
September 25, 6:30p.m. in the Media Center.
- Ways and Means:
The kick-off assembly went well, thanks to all the
parents who helped. A 22-passenger limo has been
reserved, and the focus now is on the Pizza Prize Party.
Administrative
Reports
Principal:
School year is beginning wonderfully. Mrs. Keiling and
Mrs. Powell have visited each student in their home
bases and discussed school policies. The County has lost
the math intervention program ‘I Learn’ that will
possibly be replaced by ‘Learning Island.”
Staff Report: Linda Myers reported that Nancy
Crawford thanked PTA for the $2000 budgeted for her to
use for reading incentives and guest author.
Jill Royer volunteered
to change the marquee. Submit sign changes to Debbie
Kurz.
Leslee Forster, art
teacher, is hoping a parent will donate cement for
stepping-stones.
Sherry Buesso from
Guidance has requested $800 to fund the 8th grade’s trip
to the technical school in Frederick during Career Week
in November. Kathleen Burtner is trying to secure
funding for this fieldtrip through area businesses.
Jenn Rosenberry made
the motion, seconded by Denise Thompson to fund $400 for
buses. If the Sally Foster fundraiser is successful, we
will revisit this issue at the October meeting to
determine if we can fund the full amount.
SIT: No report.
Unfinished
Business: Grass roots
representative is Shari Jenkins.
New Business
Paw Print magnets as a
fundraiser was proposed by Cathy Clemons. $735 for 500
($1.49 each) yield a profit of $765 if sold for $3 each.
They are 6 inches and will be blue and white, with a
panther draped over “TMS Panthers.” She is willing to
head
this committee. A motion was made by Cathy Clemons and
seconded by Kim Beavan to establish this committee.
The Family Fun
Committee will begin in January, when Ann Marie Shipley
will organize a day at Ski Liberty for TMS students
during a day off. Tickets will be sold at a reduced
rate. She will also sell Hershey Park tickets in the
spring, however, there will not be an an organized TMS
day.
Colorfest Parking help
is needed for October 13 from 7a.m. - 3p.m. This is a
perfect opportunity for dads to volunteer for a 2-hour
shift. Show Choir will work Sunday.
There is a
latex-sensitive student in the building. No latex
balloons at any event or sent to children for their
birthdays.
