OUR COLLECTION

Thurmont Middle School's Media Center Collection has just over 15,000 items, including books, videos, periodicals and other materials.
These items both support the FCPS curriculum and provide recreational reading materials for students and staff.

CHECK-OUT POLICIES

Students are routinely permitted to have 2 books checked out at a time, plus additional materials for special classes and research projects.
Our normal loan period is 3-weeks, and materials may be renewed as needed.
Students come to the Media Center for Book Exchange with their Language Arts classes approx. once every 3 weeks. They may also come at other times of the day providing they have a pass from a teacher.
All Media Center materials are checked in and out using a computer program which recognizes the barcode version of their FCPS ID number.

READING PROGRAMS

TMS Reading Hall of Fame
This program is a joint endeavor between the Media Center and our T.M.S. P.T.A. It rewards students for reading. All students are offered the opportunity to keep track of the books they read on Hall of Fame sheets.
Normally, approximately 10% of our students to receive “free” books at each one of our Book Fairs, courtesy of our TMS PTA.”

Reading Rally
[click for more information]
This is a program involving all FCPS Middle Schools. It is open to all students. Reading Rally participants meet weekly during their lunch shifts to eat, talk about the books, and play games based on the books being read. In January, those students who are interested in representing T.M.S. at a county-wide competition may elect to compete on our 8-person team.

MD Black-Eyed Susan Reading Program [click for this year's book list]
This is a state-wide reading program designed to acquaint Maryland's students with some of the best works published during the past 3 years. There are four different levels to the program: Picture Books, Grades 4-6, Grades 6-9, and High School. T.M.S. participates in the Grade 6-9 category. Our Media Specialist, Mrs. Crawford, is a member of the state-wide committee of school librarians who annually read approx. 100 books to compile the list of 10 books for the following year's list. Students who read a minimum of 3 of these 10 books are able to vote for the book which they consider the winner. The books (one in each level) with the most votes win the Black-Eyed Susan Awards.
