April

Happy April! I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break. Thank you to all parents that took the time to come in and review their child’s alt-portfolio. It is a big relief to all of us that they are finished and on their way to the Md. State Dept. of Ed.

Our biggest news is that we have a new student joining our class! Her name is Alexis and she lives in the Woodsboro-New Midway area. We are very excited to have her join us!

In social studies during April, we will move ahead with our Maryland unit. We will continue learning about the people who used to live in our state and what life was like for them. We will discuss Maryland becoming a state. Hopefully we will get as far as Maryland during the Civil War.

During the upcoming month, we will be starting our reading functional documents unit in language arts. We will be concentrating on menus, maps, schedules, flyers, recipes, and charts. We will also be working on persuasive writing.

For our math skills during April, we will start by reviewing what we have learned over the past seven months. If we have lost any skills, we will spend time relearning these skills. We will work on expanding addition and subtraction fluency skills. Then we will move on to learning more advanced fractions skills and multiplication skills.

When the days are nice we will begin our work to clean up the courtyard and the front garden area. We will plant seeds inside and then plant the plants in the courtyard and the front garden when they grow. (The children make the pots themselves out of newspapers.) You will get a note home the night before to dress your child appropriately for work in a garden.

And, our usual monthly request for tissues and plastic “ziplock” bags of any size….
