Rhyolite Arrowhead

The arrowhead shown below is made of a metamorphic rock named rhyolite. Rhyolite proved important to early Native Americans due to its sharp edges. Knives, scrapers, drill bits and spearheads could also be shaped out of this sharp rock found in the Catoctin Mountains of Frederick County, MD. The sample shown below was found locally around Yellow Springs.
