Weathering and Erosion - Devil's Racecourse

Back to 5th Grade Program - Back to Weathering and Erosion

The Devil's Racecourse is a boulder-strewn, upside-down stream (see picture above). Throughout the course of repeated ice ages the quartzite ridges above have been weathered and eroded by temperature changes and frost wedging.

The boulder field above overlies a stream beneath. Quartzite rocks have fallen and broken covering the stream.

Quartzite Ridge
The ridge pictured above is the source of quartzite rock for the Devil's Racecourse. As the rocks froze and thawed, they broke and eventually tumbled to the bottom of the hillside.

The size of the Devil's Racecourse is easier to determine when using this class of fifth graders as a reference point.
