Prompt

The soul of the American Revolution was George Washington, but the spirit was Patrick Henry. We all know the greatness of our First President, but have you read the speech that set the tone of our struggle for Liberty from this other Virginian? Each year we honor those who have fallen in defense of our country. But do we fully appreciate the essence of what our bravest patriots fought and died to create? The words of Patrick Henry ring true today, just as they did during his life. Read the entire speech and tell me if the struggle is any different today? Patrick Henry spoke these words on March 23, 1775 and says more about America than all the writing of those of us who revere the purpose of our vision as a Nation.

Prompt

It’s 1775, and the news of Patrick Henry’s speech has just reached Frederick, Maryland.  All are gathered around.  The streets are filled. Salons are packed.  Parlors are overflowing with friends and family.  Suddenly, as you are discussing the speech with your friends, neighbors, and relatives, you remember your relatives in South Carolina.  You want to make sure they are aware of this monumental occasion!

Finally, when your parlor has cleared out for the evening, you sit down to write a letter to your relatives in South Carolina telling them about Patrick Henry’s speech.  After all the day’s discussions, you should be able to inform your relatives whether you agree or disagree with him.  From looking at your grid, let them know if you believe it is impossible to settle the Colonists problems without going to war.  At such a trying time, you also share your hopes and fears for the future?
