bandagesSchool Health News

The Health Room Technician, under the supervision of the School Community Health Nurse is on-site each day to provide the following services:
· Provide first aid
· Provide routine care for students with chronic illnesses
· Perform treatments and administer medications
· Review health records
· Refer health concerns and issues regarding injury, disease, and illness to the School Nurse
· Assist with the monitoring of communicable diseases
· Periodically, perform screenings of classrooms / students for Pediculosis (head lice)

Medication

It is the parent/guardians responsibility to arrange for the delivery of properly labeled medication to the school. All medications must be in the original prescription container.
The first full day’s dosage of any new prescription medication will not be given in school.
The parent/guardian is responsible for submitting a new form to the school each time there is a change in dosage or time of administration.

Immunizations

Each student must have an up to date immunization record prior to entering school for the first time.

Emergency Cards

Each student should have an up to date emergency card completed with at least one emergency contact number in the event that the parents/guardians are unreachable in case of an emergency.

Illness

The following are some guidelines on when to keep your child home from school in case of illness:
1. A temperature of 100 degrees or above anytime in the past 24 hours
2. Vomiting or diarrhea anytime in the past 24 hours
3. Pink Eye: The child may not return to school until he/she has been seen by a doctor and on medication for at least 24 hours. A doctor’s note is also needed stating the child is no longer contagious.
4. Strep Throat: The child may not return to school until he/she has been on an antibiotic for at least 24 hours and no longer running a fever.
5. Ringworm: The child may not return to school until he/she has been on medication for at least 24 hours. Also, a doctor’s note is needed stating the child may return to school.
6. A rash on any area of the body that has not been looked at by a physician.

Fewer illnesses/communicable diseases will be “shared” between classmates if these guidelines are followed.

For more information on specific diseases, the medication policy, or the school health program, please contact your school nurse or health room technician. We are always happy to
