Homeland Security Network Certification

Homeland Security Logo
The weather station at DCES has become "Homeland Security Certified". To become certified the school completed an in-depth certification process, which includes collecting meta-data on their site as well as ensuring that their sensors are properly calibrated and maintained.

The weather data will provide very precise small-scale forecast models that government agencies, the military and emergency managers can use to make critical decisions like:

  • Determining which municipalities to evacuate and the order in which to do so
  • Selecting the best approach routes for police and firefighters
  • Choosing the type of equipment to dispatch to a disaster site

Our weather station is a part of a nationwide network of schools and businesses that provide real-time and near real-time weather information. Bob Ryan and News Channel 4 uses data from Deer Crossing and other local schools as part of the 4WINDS program. Weather information can be seen on weather forecasts throughout the year and can be viewed on the web.

AWS Live with Clouds and Sun

The School-based weather station uses an AWS AirWatch instrument system (Automated Weather Source).

The Sensor Suite monitors Wind speed and direction, temperature, Relative humidity, rainfall, barometric pressure and light. It is located on the school’s roof.

The Master Control Unit processes and stores weather data and contains the Internet communication port. The master control is located in the Media Center.

The Digital Display is located in the School lobby. It displays the current /min/max readings from the sensor suite. The information is presented in both English and metric units.
