May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Now that warmer weather is here, we should remember to protect ourselves from skin cancer (Melanoma). The main form of prevention is to reduce exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light by avoiding sun exposure (especially between 10am -4pm) by seeking shaded areas, using sunscreens & lip balms with a SPF of 15 or higher, avoiding tanning beds, & wearing hats/visors, & sunglasses. Other major risk factors include: certain types of moles, having fair skin, freckles, red or blond hair & personal & family history. The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals check their own skin once a month. The best time to do this is after a bath/shower. Use a full-length mirror to check for moles, blemishes, or birthmarks from the top of the head to the toes. Take note of any changes in size, shape or color, or a sore that doesn't heal, & follow up with your physician. Remember, the effects of the sun start in childhood, so it's never too soon to protect your skin!
