Title - Brunswick Railway News

April 2, 2008

Dear Parents,
Welcome Spring! With the warm weather comes very busy schedules – sports and other outside of school activities begin to occupy our evenings. Please continue to check your child’s agenda and see that assignments are completed on a daily basis. Additionally, encourage your child to read each and every day. Continuing to encourage reading through the spring months will get students in the routine of reading all summer long. Research tells us that there really is such a thing as “summer loss” for students over the summer months when they are not in school. The good news is that the loss can be minimized if students read at least four books during those months. If your child has read the four free books he/she was given last year, please encourage him/her to bring the books back to the cafeteria to swap for different ones!

Here are some notes you may find helpful:

Keys for Reading Night – Our BES chorus will sing the National Anthem at the Keys' game on Tuesday, June 4. When tickets arrive, encourage your child to attend the game on this night to hear our chorus sing!

Kindergarten Registration – If your child will turn five by September 1, 2008, please register him/her for kindergarten.
You may register at BES. Please be certain to bring: birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency and a health inventory. Please do not wait until the summer to register, staffing is determined now!

MSA Science – is a measure of student achievement in science. Students in grade 5 will be tested online between April 23 – May 5. Please make certain your child is at school and on time on the dates listed next to his/her teacher’s name: Price – April 29, May 2; Chew – April 30, May 5; T. Miller – April 23, 25.

SAT – 10 Achievement Testing April 17 & 18 – Second grade students will take this assessment on these mornings. Please be certain that your child is here on time, well rested and has had a good breakfast.

Recycle aluminum cans - We continue to recycle aluminum cans for cash. If you can contribute, bring them to the pile by the dumpsters and the loading dock.

Summer Success- Registration forms were to be turned in by April 1st. If you haven’t turned it in yet, please do so right away. The number of students registered now determines the number of staff members we can hire to teach. If your child was nominated and you have lost your registration form, please contact the school office to request another form.

Lost and Found Items – Please check the stage for items that your children may have left at the school. At the end of the month the items will be donated to Goodwill.

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon - is scheduled for Monday, April 21st. Look for more details soon!

BES Playground Nears Completion

Through efforts led by Mrs. Campbell, and with the generous donations of community members, friends, and family along with grants from FCPS and GameTime recreation we have raised the money to build the Play to Learn Playground at BES. The money was used to purchase suitable equipment for our youngest children, some of whom have physical and sensory restrictions. The playground equipment has been installed and the primary aged children are using it daily!

However, we are not quite finished! We need your help to finish a new playground area that replaces an older piece of equipment that was in disrepair. The new piece of equipment will allow our primary grade students to develop their motor skills, coordination, and strength in a safe and controlled environment. We need an additional $2000.00 to complete this last section of our new playground.

A coalition of people from Brunswick Elementary School and the local community have been working together to generate funds for this project through grants and charitable donations. We hope you are willing to assist us by generously donating towards this most worthwhile project.

Please contact Mrs. Wendy Campbell (wendy.campbell@fcps.org) at (240-236-2894 -school) or (301-371-8207 -home) for more information. Checks should be made out to the Play to Learn playground fund, which is a non-profit organization, and sent to her attention at Brunswick Elementary School at the above address. All donations over $1000.00 will receive special recognition. Also, please remember that charitable donations are tax deductible!

Do you know what your child is doing on the Internet?

Be Web Aware! With advances in computer technology, even very young children know how to get online – leaving them open to dangers of the Internet such as bullying, exploitation and abuse.
A Checklist for Parents:
** Does your family have a set of rules or an agreement for appropriate Internet use?
** Do your kids know to ask permission before submitting personal information online?
** Do you use your children’s Internet experiences as an opportunity to discuss inappropriate content, trust and responsibility?
** Do you make Internet use a family activity by guiding your kids to good sites and teaching them how to perform safe web searches?
** Have you taught your kids not to believe everything they read online, and to verify online information with an adult?
** Does your child surf the Internet at the local library? Are you familiar with their acceptable use policy?

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH ROOM

Your child’s dental health depends on you! Children need help with brushing and flossing until age 8. Brush after breakfast and at bedtime for at least 3 minutes using a soft toothbrush with a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Replace the toothbrush every 3-4 months. Children should be taught not to swallow the toothpaste. If you have well water, speak to your pediatrician or dentist about starting a fluoride supplement. Eat foods rich in calcium and vitamin D to build and keep teeth strong. Avoid a lot of sugar! When your child gets permanent molars (between the ages of 6 & 8), talk to your dentist about sealants. Sealants are a plastic coating that fills the grooves in the back teeth. This reduces the ability for food and bacteria to lodge there and cause decay. Remember…..Dental health starts early and prevention is the key to doing away with tooth decay!
