A Teacher’s Dream Playground

“Wendy Campbell is truly an unsung hero,” say her special education team teachers at Brunswick Elementary. Ms. Campbell won this year’s Community Champions teacher award and $2,500 from Sandy Springs Bank.

She will put the money toward the dream playground she has planned for the school. It will have smaller-scale equipment, bringing her special education pre-kindergarten students the same opportunities other children have.

Through persistent grant writing and many other fundraising efforts, Ms. Campbell has all but the last $5,700 of the nearly $57,000 needed for the playground’s equipment, excavation, safety surfacing, fencing, paths and ramps. The list of donors who have contributed to the project is a long one, and Ms. Campbell is grateful to them all.

On Tuesday, October 30, Sandy Spring Bank, which sponsors the awards to recognize outstanding community service given by a teacher, police officer, fire fighter, medical professional, business person, student, senior citizen, coach and family, will hold a press conference and awards banquet at La Paz Mexican Restaurant in Frederick. The press conference begins at 11 a.m. sharp, and the luncheon is noon to 1:30 p.m.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the playground for young special-needs students is invited to contact Brunswick Elementary, 240-236-2900.
