SECOND GRADE NEWSLETTER
May/June 2008

life Cycles!
In May we will begin our Life Cycles Unit. The unit will be the final science unit for the year. In the life cycle unit, students will be studying the development of various animals. Students will observe first hand the growth and development of butterflies. We will develop definitions of larva, pupa and adult through observations of those stages. We will also explore the lifecycles of other animals.

Field trip

A big thanks goes out to all the parent volunteers who gave their time to chaperone the “Way Off Broadway” Theater field trip. All the second graders had a great time and really enjoyed the play! Thank you for taking the time from your busy home/work schedules! We greatly appreciate all you do!

Home School Connections
Children may loose vital skills learned during the school year, over summer vacation. Here are some ideas to help your child retain the knowledge they have learned:
• Have a 20-30 minute daily independent
reading time
• Conduct book talks or book clubs
• Purchase workbooks (Learning How (in Freder -
ick) sells the Summer Bridge series a very
nice skill review workbook)
• Visit the public library on a frequent basis (they offer a summer reading incentive program)
• Go to museums, aquariums or other locations
where children can gain information that will help them make connections to what they read
• Practice math facts daily using flashcards, com-
puter software and internet sites ( many can be found on the second grade website at fcpsteach.org—look for B.E.S. with the teacher name Dorsey - the site is for all of 2nd grade)
• Load educational and fun computer software or visit internet sites for learning games
(Reader Rabbit, Shrek Phonics, Curious
George Reading/Phonics, etc…)
• Keep a summer vacation writing journal
• Purchase educational games (Quiddler,
Mancala, Boggle Jr., etc…)
• Play recreational sports– students learn
cooperation skills and active bodies lead to active minds

Second Grade Musical

The second grade musical was a success! Thanks again to all those backstage helpers who made costumes, etc…! The students worked long and hard in order to remember songs, lines, and movements. We had a great turn out and could tell that the audience truly enjoyed the show!

Homework

Homework will continue through the remaining weeks of May. Please make sure that your child’s agenda is checked nightly for homework assignments!

End of the Year
Wrap Up

June will bring many wonderful activities such as Field Day. We will also have our last BEST Kids Assembly in June. Look for the dates to come home in the Wednesday folder or you can check the website. Even though the year is rapidly coming to a close all students are still expected to complete homework assignments and come to school everyday on time. We hope that everyone will have a wonderful summer and remember to keep reading!!!!
