February, 2008

To the parents/guardians of students:

This winter our school will be participating in the Cool Kids Campaign’s, Cool Kids Reading Challenge! This reading contest will take place between February 1st and February 29th. It will challenge the students versus the teachers and YOU, the parents, to see who can read the most books in that time period.

This will be an exciting reading incentive for students. In addition to encouraging some friendly competition between them and their parents and teachers, they will also be raising money for the Cool Kids Campaign at the same time.

The Cool Kids Campaign is a locally operated charity, co-founded by World Champion Figure Skater Kimmie Meissner, that runs programs for kids who are currently going through cancer treatments. The Cool Kids Campaign was founded in 2006 and has already expanded its programs nationally.

Their programs include:

Cool Kids Connection – The Cool Kids Connection is a one of a kind newspaper that is published to give the kids and their families a way to connect with each other about their journey through cancer. The Connection is sent to over 150 hospitals across the country that treat pediatric oncology.

Cool Kids Family Support Fund – This fund provides monetary aid to families who are experiencing financial distress due to their child’s cancer diagnosis. Through this fund we pay off creditors directly for the family.

Cool Kids Insurance Advocacy Program – Our insurance advocacy program helps guide the family through the complexities of their insurance coverage. Our pamphlets explain to them their rights and obligations as a patient and also help the uninsured and underinsured maximize the benefits that are due to them. This program also aids the families in dealing with existing insurance issues.

Cool Kids Care Packages – These gift boxes are sent directly to the children at their home. The care packages are full of items that the kids requested through a wish list that they complete.

We are very excited to be able to participate in this fundraising opportunity that will raise money for a worthy cause while encouraging the children to read. There are several prize levels as well that will enable the kids to be rewarded for their efforts.

If you would like any additional information about the Cool Kids Campaign you can visit their website at www.coolkidscampaign.org or send any questions via email to sharon@bfpf.org or call 410-560-1770.
